Laptop Adware Class Action Settlement

According to the Lenovo laptop adware class action settlement, the Lenovo computers were equipped with software, VisualDiscovery. It was created by Superfish and is known to create problems with performance.

Not just the performance, it also allowed the company to monitor the user’s activity.

With this happening, it is a settlement worth $8.3 million and has now reached a lawsuit with the allegation that the company software inhibited performance. This class action lawsuit also says that about 800,000 laptops were sold with the VisualDiscovery software.

The plaintiffs claim that checking online interests in this manner is a way to target some advertisements to the users. Moreover, it is also considered as the invasion in their privacy.

This lawsuit was filed in 2015 and won the certification in 2016. But the adware class action settlement was proposed in 2018, which is three years after litigation.

Are You Eligible?

The eligible class members include the customers who have purchased non think branded Lenovo laptops between Sept 1, 2014, and Feb 28, 2015.

The models included are:

  • G Series: G410, G510, G710, G40-70, G50-70, G40-30, G50-30, G50-45
  • U Series: U430P, U430Touch, U530Touch
  • Y Series: Y40-70, Y50-70
  • Z Series: Z50-75, Z40-70, Z50-70
  • Flex Series: Flex2 14D, Flex2 15D, Flex2 14, Flex2 15, Flex2 15(BTM), Flex 10
  • MIIX Series: MIIX2-10, MIIX2-11
  • YOGA Series: YOGA2Pro-13, YOGA2-13, YOGA2-11BTM, YOGA2-11HSW

If you are eligible, you will receive an estimated claim amount of $40 or up to $750. However, you need to provide the proof of loss along with the claim form.

If you want to object for this settlement or plan to exclude yourself from this settlement, you have until 25 March 2019 to do so.
